Sargeant: Verstappen in Ford Hypercar would dominate WEC

American believes Verstappen’s pace and racecraft would overwhelm the Hypercar field

While Max Verstappen spends his weekend tackling the “Green Hell” at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, the conversation around his long-term future is shifting toward another legendary endurance race: Le Mans.

With Ford Performance confirming regular discussions with the Dutchman about a future Hypercar seat, former F1 driver Logan Sargeant has made it clear that a Verstappen move to the WEC would be a game-changer for the entire grid.

The ultimate “plug and play” driver

Logan Sargeant, currently competing for Ford in the LMGT3 class before moving to their 2027 Hypercar program, sees Verstappen as the missing piece for a winning Le Mans assault.

For Sargeant, the advantage of having Max in the garage goes far beyond raw speed; it’s about the technical mastery he brings from his dominant F1 career.

Speaking on the prospect of sharing a car with the triple world champion, Sargeant was enthusiastic about the competitive edge it would provide:

“Well, if he is driving, I hope he’s in my car!” said the ex-F1 driver to Motorsport.com.

“That’s for sure. In my opinion, Max is the best to ever do it. So if I could share a car with him, that would be a huge privilege and a huge advantage.”

When asked to elaborate on what that advantage looks like in a race as grueling as Le Mans, Sargeant’s response was blunt:

“Well, he’s the quickest driver in the world. He’s going to most likely kick everyone’s ass. I’d rather that be in my car than the other.”

Learning from the master of consistency

According to Sargeant, the benefits of Verstappen’s presence extend to the team’s entire development cycle.

He believes Max’s ability to adapt and extract performance from any machinery, even when it isn’t perfect, is what sets him apart from the rest of the field.

“It goes so much beyond just driving style, seeing what he’s doing with the tools, lap in, lap out, how he’s making adjustments…” Sargeant admitted.

“Obviously, he has so much experience from Formula 1. For him, it would just be like plug and play. There’s so much you can learn from someone like that.”

Sargeant concluded by highlighting Verstappen’s unique ability to elevate a car beyond its natural limits, a trait that would be invaluable in the complex world of Hypercar regulations:

“You don’t win four world championships without the speed he has. You see it, even when he’s not in the best car, he still finds a way to make it work. That can’t be said for everyone.”

As Ford prepares to enter the Hypercar class in 2027, the prospect of Verstappen leading their charge is no longer just a fan theory.

If Sargeant’s prediction holds true, the rest of the WEC field should be very worried about the arrival of the Dutchman in the world of endurance racing.
