McLaren F1 Team Profile: History, Drivers and 2026 Season
The McLaren F1 team is one of the most iconic names in motorsport. With back-to-back Constructors’ Championships in 2024 and 2025, the papaya squad enters 2026 as the team to beat. But defending a title under sweeping new regulations is never easy. Here is everything you need to know about McLaren right now.
McLaren F1 Team: Base, Leadership and Identity
McLaren Racing is a British motor racing team based at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, Surrey, England. The famous MTC is the nerve centre of the entire operation, where hundreds of engineers, strategists, and mechanics push the car forward every single day.
The man running it all is Italian engineer Andrea Stella. Since 2023, Stella has served as team principal of McLaren in Formula One, winning two World Constructors’ Championship titles in 2024 and 2025. His background is impressive. He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering and began his F1 career as a performance engineer with Ferrari, initially in the test team before promotion to the race team as part of Michael Schumacher’s side of the garage in 2002. Stella is calm, precise, and deeply technical. Those qualities have shaped McLaren’s recent rise.
CEO Zak Brown provides the commercial firepower, while chief designer Rob Marshall leads the car’s technical direction. McLaren technical director Mark Temple has provided detailed insights into the 2026 regulations, focusing on power unit energy management and aerodynamic modifications, speaking alongside team principal Andrea Stella and chief designer Rob Marshall.
Championship History and Recent Success
McLaren is the second-oldest active team and the second-most successful Formula One team after Ferrari, having won 203 races, 13 Drivers’ Championships, and 10 Constructors’ Championships. Some of the sport’s greatest drivers made their names with the team, including Emerson Fittipaldi, Ayrton Senna, Mika Hakkinen and Lewis Hamilton.
The modern era has been special. After years in the midfield, McLaren’s comeback has been stunning. A historic 10th Constructors’ World Championship was sealed under the lights in Singapore, less than three years after the team started the 2023 season at the back of the field. They then backed it up immediately. The 2025 success made it back-to-back Constructors’ Championships for McLaren, a historic return to when the team boasted multiple titles through the 1980s and early 1990s. It was the first time since 1991 that they had successfully defended a Constructors’ crown.
Lando Norris became world champion for the first time in 2025 after finishing third at a dramatic concluding Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, edging out race winner Max Verstappen in the title battle by just two points. McLaren F1 Team 2026: Drivers and Current Standings
McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 will race with Mercedes-Benz power in the 2026 F1 season, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Both drivers are locked in as a formidable pairing. Piastri holds a multi-year deal with McLaren which will keep him at the Woking-based outfit until at least the end of 2027.
The 2026 season has been tricky. The massive regulation reset caught McLaren off guard early on. The British team started the year with an underdeveloped car, having last season been drawn into a Drivers’ Championship battle that went all the way to the final race. That, combined with the necessity to get on top of an all-new power unit from long-time supplier Mercedes, meant they started their 2026 campaign on the back foot.
However, they fought back. Defending champions McLaren brought a “completely new car” across the Miami and Canadian Grands Prix as they looked to take the fight to pace-setters Mercedes. The recovery has been steady. McLaren sits third in the Constructors’ Championship on 179 points after another points-scoring weekend for Norris and Piastri at the British Grand Prix. In the Drivers’ Championship, Lando Norris sits fourth with 85 points and Oscar Piastri sixth with 82 points. Read our full breakdown on why McLaren admitted they were not good enough at Silverstone.
Technical Philosophy: What Makes McLaren Different
McLaren’s core engineering identity centres on aerodynamic efficiency, tyre interaction, and relentless development. Stella acknowledged that while much of McLaren’s recent engineering know-how can carry over into 2026, certain elements will need to be reinvented to adapt to the new regulations. “There’s a part of the know-how that is transferable to the work on 2026 and there’s a part of the know-how that you have to reinvent,” the Italian added.
Stella said he is not concerned about budget as McLaren had specifically allocated budget to developing the car, knowing this season would be a development war. “We always said in relation to the 2026 season that irrespective of the starting position it was going to be at the battle of development,” Stella explained. That long-term planning is exactly what makes this team distinctive. They do not panic. They plan.
Under these new rules, energy management is everything. McLaren’s technical director believes drivers face added pressure with performance gains no longer coming from a single mode such as DRS. “The need to harvest energy more consciously and then choose where you use it is going to be critical.” For a deep dive on how Mercedes surprised McLaren at Silverstone, see our piece on the Mercedes engine trick at the British GP.
