Zandvoort in pictures: the GT World Challenge weekend through Tessa van Duin’s lens
The Race 2 start, the crash at the banking, the winning pit stop and the celebration, in fifteen photos
More than 26,000 people came to Zandvoort from 18 to 20 September for the penultimate round of the GT World Challenge Europe Sprint Cup. Our photographer Tessa van Duin was there all weekend. The fifteen photos in the slider above are her Sunday: the start of Race 2, the crash at the banking, the pit stop that set up the win, and the celebration afterwards.
Two Ferraris in front at the banking
Race 2 started with both Emil Frey Racing Ferraris at the front. Konsta Lappalainen led from pole in the pink number 14, with Ben Green in the number 69 right behind him. Green passed his team-mate at the restart, and Thierry Vermeulen brought the number 69 home to win Race 2, 3.7 seconds ahead of Bastian Buus. Matteo Cairoli finished third in the number 14, which is why the whole team is in the last photo.
Several frames in the slider were shot from the same spot on the outside of the Hugenholtzbocht, a few seconds apart. In one of them smoke rises in the middle of the pack: that is the crash that brought out the safety car. Over the weekend the banked third corner produced five incidents, two safety cars and a penalty.
A Gold Cup McLaren won on Saturday
Saturday belonged to Garage 59. Morris Schuring took pole in front of a home crowd, but Thomas Fleming went around the outside of his Porsche before the Hugenholtzbocht, and Fleming and Louis Prette won Race 1 outright in the number 58 McLaren, a Gold Cup car. The slider shows that McLaren again on Sunday, with PRE, for Prette, on the windscreen banner.
The Porsche that now leads the Sprint Cup
The number 80 Lionspeed GP Porsche of Bastian Buus and Ricardo Feller did not win either race, but second place on Sunday was enough. The crews ahead of them both had a weekend to forget, and Buus and Feller left Zandvoort leading the Sprint Cup for the first time. The last round is at Barcelona from 1 to 4 October, with 35 points still available and 9.5 points between first and fourth. Our Barcelona preview runs through the arithmetic.
