Leclerc wins 2026 British Grand Prix in chaos

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc snatched a stunning victory at Silverstone as Antonelli's title challenge was rocked by a cruel mechanical failure.

Leclerc wins 2026 British Grand Prix in one of the most chaotic and dramatic races of the season, with championship leader Kimi Antonelli suffering a cruel mechanical failure that sent him tumbling out of the points at Silverstone.

Scuderia Ferrari had a day to remember on Sunday. Charles Leclerc crossed the line first ahead of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, as a safety car-affected finish left fans on their feet and the paddock buzzing.

How Leclerc wins 2026 British Grand Prix from the start

Leclerc made a lightning start, with both he and team-mate Lewis Hamilton getting ahead of Antonelli off the line. That was the moment that changed everything. Charles Leclerc made a flying launch and took the lead ahead of Lewis Hamilton, with pole-sitter Antonelli dropping to third.

While Antonelli eventually caught Hamilton for second place, Leclerc remained steady ahead, only losing the lead when he made his pit stop. That handed the lead to Antonelli, who stretched out his stint before eventually pitting on Lap 36.

Hamilton was noted for a false start, which became a stewards’ investigation that resulted in a five-second penalty. He served it during his pitstop and still managed to hold onto a podium position.

Antonelli’s nightmare: the failure that changed everything

After pitting, Antonelli went on the attack to chase down Leclerc. But the chase did not last long. The Italian promptly went after Leclerc, but this came undone when he experienced an issue with his car on Lap 41, which the team suggested was a left front wheel shield failure.

Kimi Antonelli was looking set to claim the win at Silverstone and was catching Leclerc at a rapid rate, before suffering a bizarre Mercedes wheel shield failure. He was forced to pit again to have it removed. Luckless Antonelli crossed the finish line in 16th, seeing his championship lead on team-mate Russell dwindle to 25 points.

To add to his misery, Antonelli was also given a five-second penalty for repeated track limits violations. It was a brutal afternoon for the championship leader. Verstappen crash sets up dramatic safety car finish

Just when it seemed Leclerc would cruise home, the race was thrown into chaos once more. Max Verstappen, who was running third at the time, spun out on the 48th of 52 laps at Silverstone and could not escape the gravel, bringing out the yellow flag and safety car.

Verstappen’s off brought out the safety car, which looked like it was going to set up a manic one-lap shoot-out as the majority of the field pitted for soft tyres. Russell stayed out on his mediums, however, keeping his track position in second ahead of Hamilton and McLaren’s Lando Norris.

A late safety car was thrown into the mix following the crash for Verstappen at Stowe while in third. Unfortunately, there was insufficient time to restart the race. The race ended behind the safety car, to a chorus of boos from the crowd.

Norris ended up in fourth, benefitting from Verstappen’s and Antonelli’s misfortune after the reigning world champion had been all at sea with his McLaren, which was unable to keep up with the competition on Silverstone’s demanding layout. We looked at exactly why before the race in our piece on McLaren not being good enough at Silverstone, as Norris admitted.

Isack Hadjar was fifth for Red Bull, ahead of midfield leaders Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad for Racing Bulls. Gabriel Bortoleto finally scored hard-earned points for Audi with eighth, with Alpine duo Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly rounding out the top ten.

What the British GP result means for the championship

This is where things get really interesting. The result slashes Antonelli’s championship lead to 25 points over team-mate Russell, and to 32 over Hamilton.

For Leclerc, this is his first win since the United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas in October 2024. It is a massive result for Ferrari, and it puts real pressure on Mercedes heading into the summer stretch of the season.

The Leclerc wins 2026 British Grand Prix story also comes with a cloud hanging over Hamilton. Hamilton finished third despite a five-second penalty for jumping the start, but is under investigation for yellow-flag misconduct. The 2026 F1 season just got a whole lot more exciting. Antonelli still leads, but his advantage is shrinking fast. With Ferrari and Mercedes so evenly matched, every single race from here matters. You can follow all the official race results and standings at Formula1.com.
