Ferrari brings major upgrade package to Spain

Eight-part aerodynamic overhaul aims to close gap to Mercedes

Ferrari arrives in Barcelona with its most substantial development step of the season, introducing an eight‑component upgrade package designed to boost downforce, widen the car’s operating window and revive its championship challenge.

The most comprehensive update of Ferrari’s 2026 campaign

Ferrari has chosen the Circuit de Barcelona‑Catalunya as the launch point for a major aerodynamic evolution of the SF‑26. The team has reworked several key areas of the car, including the front wing, floor, diffuser and rear wing, with the goal of improving load generation and stability in medium‑ and high‑speed corners. Engineers describe the package as a “structural step” rather than a routine refinement, signalling the importance of this weekend in Ferrari’s development trajectory.

The front wing features a revised footplate and a new diveplane configuration, reshaping how the wing distributes load across its span. This is paired with a modified nose structure and updated DRS linkages, improving the consistency of the car’s aero platform under braking and turn‑in. The floor has undergone the most dramatic transformation, with a redesigned roof section, reprofiled tunnels and a new central ‘canoe’ geometry intended to increase underbody efficiency. Ferrari has also introduced a fresh diffuser layout with altered sidewall cutouts and winglet angles to enhance expansion and stability.

Leclerc calls upgrades “crucial” for title fight

Charles Leclerc emphasised that Ferrari cannot afford to lose development momentum as Mercedes continues to execute flawlessly with Antonelli at the front. The Monegasque driver sits 81 points behind the championship leader, while Ferrari trails Mercedes by 79 points in the constructors’ standings. Both Leclerc and Sainz believe the Barcelona package must deliver immediate gains to keep the title fight alive heading into the summer stretch.

The team expects the new high‑downforce rear wing and beam wing combination to be particularly valuable at Barcelona, a circuit that exposes weaknesses in balance and aero efficiency. Ferrari hopes the upgrades will not only improve peak performance but also reduce the car’s sensitivity to wind and track temperature, two areas that have cost the team valuable points this season.

Rivals also bring updates to Spain

Ferrari is not alone in rolling out developments this weekend. McLaren has introduced a revised front‑wing endplate, Mercedes has added small winglets to the rear‑wing centreline, and Red Bull has updated its front‑wing geometry. The competitive order remains tight, and Barcelona’s representative layout will offer a clear indication of which team has made the biggest step forward.

Ferrari’s eight‑part upgrade package marks a decisive moment in its 2026 campaign. If the changes deliver as intended, the team could re‑enter the fight at the front. If not, the gap to Mercedes may become increasingly difficult to close as the season progresses.
