Karting titles and two near misses in junior single-seaters

Doohan won the Australian Kart Championship in 2015 and 2016 and finished third in the CIK-FIA European Championship in the OK Junior class in 2017. In his first car season, 2018, he was fifth and the best rookie in British F4, with three wins.

He finished second in the F3 Asian Championship, and in 2021 he was runner-up in the FIA Formula 3 Championship with Trident, with four wins. In Formula 2 he was sixth in 2022 and third in 2023, both times with Virtuosi and with three wins each season.

Seven Grands Prix for Alpine

Doohan joined the Alpine academy in 2022 and was the team’s reserve driver in 2023 and 2024, with Friday practice outings along the way. He made his Formula 1 debut at the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and finished 15th.

Alpine promoted him to a race seat for 2025, but after the first six races Franco Colapinto took over the car. Doohan’s best result in that spell was 13th at the Chinese Grand Prix, and he did not score a point. He spent the rest of the year as reserve, and on 13 January 2026 Alpine announced that the two had parted ways by mutual agreement. A planned move to Super Formula in Japan did not go ahead.

Haas reserve and a switch to endurance racing

In February 2026 Haas signed him as one of its two reserve drivers, alongside Ryo Hirakawa. “I’m thrilled to be joining TGR Haas F1 Team,” Doohan said at the time, as quoted by Formula 1. When Haas needed a stand-in for Esteban Ocon at the Mexico City Grand Prix, it chose Hirakawa: Ocon replaced, Hirakawa races.

At the same time Doohan began a sportscar career. He raced the #24 Nielsen Racing Oreca 07 in the European Le Mans Series with Roy Nissany and Ed Pearson, finished 14th in the LMP2 standings with 21 points, and was part of the team’s crew at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June.

AF Corse in the Asian Le Mans Series

For the winter Doohan moves to AF Corse, the only team with cars in all three classes of the Asian Le Mans Series. He is one of four platinum-rated drivers in LMP2, where the champions earn an invitation to the 2027 24 Hours of Le Mans. The season has two four-hour races each at Paul Ricard, Jerez and Portimão. Our read

Doohan’s Formula 1 career ended before it had really started: six races in a car that was rarely in the points is a small sample. His junior record, runner-up in F3 and third in F2, says he has the speed. Endurance racing gives him what F1 did not, a full season of racing, and a strong winter with AF Corse would make him one of the most interesting names on the LMP2 market for 2027.
