Charles Leclerc has opened up about the competitive background surrounding his multi-year contract extension with Ferrari, confirming that multiple rival proposals were on his radar before he elected to anchor his Formula 1 future to Maranello.
The Monegasque’s decision to commit long-term provides vital stability to the team, ensuring that one of the sport’s premier talents remains entirely focused on restoring Ferrari to world championship glory.
Navigating interest from rival F1 teams
Leclerc’s position in the driver market had naturally drawn significant attention from the paddock. With major seat movements shaking up the grid, top-tier organizations were eager to tempt the Ferrari driver away, a reality he candidly acknowledged when asked if he received concrete offers from other teams.
“There were, yes. I’m not going to say who. They can say it if they want, but for me, Ferrari has always been the choice,” Leclerc stated in the FIA press conference in Monaco.
“My love for the team is very, very big. But of course winning is important for every driver, it’s what we race for. But winning in red for me has got a very unique feeling and something I’ve dedicated all the years so far in Formula 1 to try and achieve.”
Rather than engaging in a protracted bidding war during the peak of silly season, Leclerc preferred to lock down his baseline early, with team principal Fred Vasseur playing a key role in confirming that Maranello remains his ideal sporting home.
“Above all, I believe in their project. Together with Fred, we have a good relationship, and I believe he is the right person to bring Ferrari back to the top.”
The roadmap back to the top
With the administrative details of his contract settled, Leclerc’s focus returns to the reality of the 2026 technical landscape.
While Ferrari has enjoyed a respectable campaign, the driver was remarkably clear about where the Scuderia is currently losing ground to its rivals, pointing directly towards the power unit performance.
“It has been a good start to the season, although not as good as we wanted, because we want to aim for the world championship,” Leclerc admitted.
“But there has been a lot of innovation on the car and we know what we are missing, it is probably more on the engine side. We have a plan to fix all of this, and hopefully, it will bring us back to the position where we want to be.”
Armed with a clear plan, and having signed his new contract to firmly seal his long-term future, Leclerc enters his home race in Monaco with absolute clarity, aiming to maximize the SF-26’s potential.
