Antonelli rejects Russell’s championship mind games in Monaco

Kimi Antonelli has firmly rejected George Russell’s assertion that the 2026 F1 World Championship is now “his title to lose”. Arriving in Monte Carlo on the back of an incredible run of form, the young Italian is keeping his feet firmly on the ground, refusing to let his teammate’s defeatist comments distract him from the task at hand.

Refusing to give way to premature title talk

The intra-team dynamic at Mercedes exploded into the headlines following Russell’s devastating retirement from the lead in Montreal, which cleared the path for Antonelli’s fourth consecutive victory.

Russell openly told the media that unless his teammate falters, the crown is effectively out of his own reach.

When confronted with these comments during the Monaco media day, the 19-year-old Italian dismissed the premature narrative with mature pragmatism.

“No, to be fair, I don’t really give way to that line, because it’s so early in the season, still 17 more races left and it’s still very, very early to think or talk about the championship,” Antonelli stated to the media.

“I try to do my best, whenever I go in the car, I try to maximise the result, and then we’ll see where we end up at the end of the season. But I also think it’s difficult to think about losing something when you don’t even have it.

“I didn’t win the championship. How can I lose something that I didn’t even achieve?”

By focusing purely on execution rather than historical consequences, Antonelli is successfully neutralizing the intense spotlight that comes with being a teenage championship leader.

“I don’t feel that much pressure. I feel pretty relaxed about the situation because it is still very early on into the season, and I just want to keep on doing what I’m doing, trying to raise the bar and trying to win as much as possible,” the Mercedes driver added.

Managing heavy expectations

As the first Italian driver in decades to look capable of fighting for a world title, the hype surrounding Antonelli is reaching a fever pitch.

While he acknowledges the passionate support stemming from his home country, he remains fiercely disciplined about blocking out the external noise.

“Of course, I know expectations are growing, and as I’m Italian myself, I know how emotional we are and how excited we can get about things.

“But I’m going to try not to get carried away by these expectations, I’m just going to try to stay focused on what I have to do in the process, and then try to deliver the best result possible.”
