McLaren breaks silence on turning point Hungary 2026
Andrea Stella opens up on the 'heavy price' of back-to-back titles and what Piastri's reaction really says about McLaren's team spirit.
McLaren ended a long win drought when Lando Norris took victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix, the team’s first win since the 2025 Mexico City Grand Prix. But is one win enough to call it a genuine turning point? Stella is being careful.

McLaren turning point Hungary 2026: what Stella really said
Stella was measured when asked directly about a turning point. “I think it’s far too early to say whether this is a turning point for McLaren, or not. We just look at the facts,” he said, adding that the pole position felt like “a little bit of an over-achievement.”
On race day, Norris converted pole position into victory at the Hungaroring, his 12th Grand Prix win and his first with the number 1 on the car. It was, however, a bittersweet result, as McLaren missed out on what could have been a double podium due to a gearbox reliability issue on Oscar Piastri’s car, which caused him to retire from the race.
Stella did add that “the Budapest weekend, which brought the first half of the season to a close, was the highlight: not only because of the result, but above all because the aerodynamic package we introduced at the Hungaroring is the result of this change of direction in development.”
The heavy price of winning everything in 2025
McLaren secured a Formula 1 championship double in 2025, with Lando Norris scoring the team its first drivers’ title since Lewis Hamilton’s success in 2007. But a relentless push to fend off Max Verstappen in the closing stages of that season saw the team put extra resources into its outgoing car, meaning there was less focus on the all-new 2026 regulations.
Stella reflected: “After three years of steady progress that saw us win three out of four world titles between 2024 and 2025, the start of this season has been a real reset: not only because the rule changes were probably the most significant ever in the history of this sport, but above all because we realised just how heavy a price we had paid for the effort we put in during 2025 to secure the world double.”
The start of the 2026 campaign proved particularly difficult for McLaren, with the team suffering a double DNS at the Chinese Grand Prix. Mercedes adapted fastest, emerging as the early force of the new era, while McLaren struggled to reproduce the authority it had enjoyed throughout much of 2025. Is the McLaren turning point Hungary 2026 for real?
Despite the caution, Stella did send a message to rivals. The McLaren boss has issued a warning to his team’s rivals for the remainder of the 2026 season, expressing confidence in the Woking squad’s ability to maintain momentum once it has been gained.
Stella has been open about the areas McLaren needed to improve, previously pointing to how the team had been some months behind on aero development relative to the likes of Mercedes, but had high hopes its proven track record at introducing efficient upgrades could help close the gap.
“I think, like it’s always been in this 2026 season, it’s a matter of a race of upgrades, and the good news is that McLaren is now back in this race of upgrades while fighting for the lead,” Stella said.
At the halfway point of the championship, the Woking-based team sit third in the Constructors’ standings, trailing Mercedes by 159 points and Ferrari by 87, with 11 races still remaining. That is still a big gap to close. But on the McLaren turning point Hungary 2026 question, the direction of travel is now clearly upward. Piastri’s reaction was ‘not quite so predictable’
One of the most candid moments from Stella’s mid-season review was his comment about Oscar Piastri. After a bruising 2025 title battle that Piastri came so close to winning, there were real questions about how the Australian would cope in 2026.
Stella admitted that while he expected Norris to be fully bought in after his championship season, things were “not quite so predictable” for the Australian after the disappointment of missing out on the title.
Stella explained: “It wasn’t a given that, after last year, when they found themselves battling for the world title right up to the final race, the harmony they’d built would remain intact. Yet not only has this not changed, but the relationship between them and with the team has actually become even stronger. And whilst this might have been expected of Lando, it was not quite so predictable for Oscar, who has relied even more heavily on the team to accelerate his development.”
That is a big compliment to Piastri. It also shows just how much team spirit matters inside McLaren. For more on the papaya rules controversy in Hungary, we have a dedicated article breaking it all down.
What comes next for McLaren?
McLaren heads into the second half of the season with real belief. Stella is not ready to abandon the team’s ambitions of securing a third consecutive Constructors’ Championship, although he admitted their title hopes will depend heavily on the development battle over the remainder of the season.
“I expect that optimising the power unit will remain a complex issue throughout the 2026 season,” Stella explained. There is still work to do. But the McLaren turning point Hungary 2026 moment has given the whole team a lift heading into the second half of the year.
The next big test comes at the Dutch Grand Prix 2026, the historic final race at Zandvoort, where McLaren will want to prove Hungary was no one-off. Stella summed it up best: “I believe the most important lesson we’ve taken away from these seven months of hard work is that, in times of great difficulty, unity is strength. We tried to understand the technical and strategic reasons, and we focused our efforts. And that makes me truly proud of this team.”
