Le Mans is a three-class race. Alongside Hypercar and LMGT3 sits LMP2, a spec prototype class in which every car is an Oreca 07-Gibson — identical machinery, and the cheapest route onto the grid.
The 2026 entry was 18 Hypercars, 19 LMP2 cars and 25 LMGT3 entries, 62 in total. Any account of the race that mentions only Hypercar and LMGT3 has left out roughly a third of the field.
How the Race Is Neutralised
Three levels, and it is worth knowing which is which:
Slow Zone — 80 km/h on one marked stretch of the lap, the rest of the circuit still racing. Nine zones in 2026.
Full Course Yellow — the same 80 km/h, but everywhere, with a twenty-second countdown and the pit entry automatically closed.
Safety Car — three of them, deployed from separate points, splitting the field into three trains.
Le Mans does not use Code 60. That is a Nürburgring procedure at 60 km/h.
