Oscar Piastri McLaren Driver Profile: The Australian Ace Chasing His First Title in 2026

Oscar Piastri is one of Formula 1’s most exciting young talents. The Oscar Piastri McLaren partnership has already produced race wins, podiums, and two Constructors’ Championships. Now in his fourth F1 season with McLaren, the Australian is hungry for his first Drivers’ title. Here is everything you need to know about the man in car number 81.

Oscar Piastri: key facts

  • Full name: Oscar Jack Piastri
  • Nationality: Australian
  • Date of birth: 6 April 2001, Melbourne, Victoria
  • Car number: 81
  • Team: McLaren
  • F1 debut: 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix

As of the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix, Piastri has achieved nine race wins, six pole positions, nine fastest laps, and 28 podiums in Formula One. He is contracted to remain at McLaren until at least the end of the 2028 season.

Piastri initially adopted the number 11 in kart racing, but switched to 81 in national competition after a rival started using it. “I don’t know what inspired me to pick 81,” he explained. “But I changed the first one for a number eight, and it stuck ever since.”

A Junior Career Like No Other

Piastri won both the 2020 FIA Formula 3 and 2021 FIA Formula 2 Championships back-to-back with Prema, becoming the sixth driver in history to win the GP2/Formula 2 title in their rookie season. He is the only driver in history to win Formula Renault, Formula Three, and Formula Two in successive seasons.

That record made him one of the most sought-after rookies in years. Alpine announced Piastri would drive for them in 2023, but he rejected their announcement two hours later, stating he had not signed a contract and would not be driving for them. McLaren won the battle for his signature, and the rest is history.

F1 Career Highlights

Piastri made his F1 debut with McLaren in 2023 alongside Lando Norris. It proved a difficult start for McLaren as the team conceded it was behind on car development going into the season. But Piastri kept his head down. He secured two podium finishes at the Japanese and Qatar Grands Prix in his rookie season and won the Qatar sprint race. He also won the FIA Rookie of the Year award.

In 2024, as McLaren emerged as a force, Piastri scored points in all but one of the 24 races. In Hungary, he finally stepped onto the top step of the podium, following that up with a second win in Azerbaijan. He proved vital in McLaren securing their first Constructors’ title since 1998.

2025 was even better. He took seven victories and his maiden pole position at the Chinese Grand Prix. He finished the season with seven victories and 16 podiums, both records for an Australian driver. However, he finished the season third in the standings, 13 points behind eventual champion and McLaren teammate Norris. He also helped lead the team to a second consecutive Constructors’ title in 2025.

2026: a tough but improving campaign

The 2026 season has not been smooth. Having qualified fifth for the season-opening Australian Grand Prix at home, he crashed on his reconnaissance lap due to an unexpected engine surge while driving over a kerb and failed to start the race. At the Chinese Grand Prix, he again failed to start due to an electrical issue before the formation lap.

Things improved. He finished second at the Japanese Grand Prix behind Kimi Antonelli, and placed second in the Miami sprint before qualifying seventh and finishing third in the main race. McLaren brought a big upgrade to Miami. Piastri believes McLaren can now challenge Mercedes after a sprint win and double-podium at the Miami GP.

At Austria, Norris and Piastri qualified sixth and seventh for McLaren as Mercedes dominated. You can read more about the dramatic qualifying session in our Austrian GP pole report, and follow the team’s qualifying story here.

Driving Style and Personality

Known for his calm and precise approach, Piastri has impressed with his ability to manage complex tyres and powerful cars of the modern era. Two-time champion Mika Hakkinen described his driving as “beautiful.” Piastri has been noted by drivers and critics for his composure under pressure. In 2023, The Race compared his “relaxed intensity” to that of Max Verstappen.

McLaren say Oscar exudes calm and is a quick learner, impressing their race team with a composed approach that has seen him go from strength to strength since his debut.

Off track, Piastri is interested in video games, particularly Call of Duty, and cooking. He is a supporter of Melbourne-based Australian rules football club Richmond. He is widely liked in the paddock for his dry humour and no-nonsense attitude.

What Makes Piastri Unique

No active F1 driver can match Piastri’s junior record. Winning Formula Renault, F3, and F2 back-to-back is something that has never been done before or since. He arrived in F1 already polished, and his growth since has been rapid. With nine wins before his 26th birthday and McLaren contracted through 2028, Piastri has the team, the talent, and the time to win a world championship. The question in 2026 is whether he can stay ahead in a season dominated so far by Mercedes. After the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, round 15 of 23, he is seventh in the championship with 120 points, 66 behind his McLaren team-mate Lando Norris.
