Who Is Rocco Coronel? Family, Nationality and Background
Rocco Coronel is a Dutch racing driver who competes for MP Motorsport in the F4 Spanish Championship as a member of the Red Bull Junior Team. He is the son of accomplished touring car racer Tom Coronel and fellow racing driver Paulien Zwart, making him arguably the most pedigreed teenager in European single-seaters right now. He is also the nephew of Dakar regular Tim Coronel. Racing is not a hobby in this family. It is the family business.
Born on 23 October 2010 in Eemnes, Utrecht, Coronel grew up trackside. He began driving karts in 2014 before making his competitive debut in 2021, winning the GK4 title and finishing runner-up in the IAME Netherlands Series, both in mini karts. The trajectory from there was steep and unbroken.
Career Highlights: From Karting Champion to Red Bull Junior
Coronel achieved major success on the international karting stage in 2023, claiming the FIA Karting European Championship title in the highly competitive OK-Junior category. In 2024, he competed in OK-Junior karting with VictoryLane, finishing third in the FIA Karting World Championship OK-Junior.
Red Bull noticed. He joined the Red Bull Junior Team in 2024 after progressing through the highest levels of national and international karting.
The move into cars in 2025 was where Coronel truly announced himself. He embarked on his full-season car racing debut in the 2025 Ginetta Junior Championship with R Racing, delivering an exceptionally consistent and dominant rookie campaign that culminated in him securing the championship title in October 2025 with two races remaining.
During that title-winning effort, he secured a remarkable 11 victories and a total of 19 podium finishes out of 22 races. Coronel is recognised as the first non-British driver ever to become champion in the series’ history. That is not a footnote. That is a statement.
Weeks after his 15th birthday, the teenager made his Formula 4 debut in the final 2025 F4 Spanish round at Barcelona, claiming a podium in his first competitive single-seater meeting. The step up was seamless.
Rocco Coronel in the 2026 Spanish F4 Championship
In early 2026, Coronel joined Van Amersfoort Racing to compete in the first three rounds of the Formula Winter Series, where he took his maiden single-seater win in race two at Estoril. In parallel, he continued with MP Motorsport to race in the Eurocup-4 Spanish Winter Championship, taking four podiums and ending the season seventh overall.
Then came the main event. Coronel remained with MP for the main Spanish F4 season, which he kicked off by winning twice in Valencia. In Race 2, he made an immediate impact at the start, gaining track position off the line to move into the lead, then managed the race with confidence and kept his rivals at bay throughout.
Kanthan had taken pole in qualifying with a 1:33.815, and Coronel missed top spot by only 0.010 seconds, immediately setting up a direct fight between the pair. That margin tells you everything about the level Coronel is operating at.
Portimão brought turbulence. After dominating the season opener at Valencia, Coronel still left Portugal with the championship lead, but his advantage was reduced significantly as Łyżeń and Schormans closed in. He left Portimão leading the standings on 76 points, but Noah Monteiro took over at MotorLand Aragón and Kasper Schormans moved to the front at Jarama in August. At Jerez in September, Coronel ended his wait for a win: after a red flag in qualifying left him eighth for the first two races, he won race three from pole and climbed to fourth in the championship, 38 points behind Schormans with two rounds left, according to RacingNews365. Coronel carries the number 23 for MP Motorsport in 2026.
The editorial read here is straightforward: Coronel does not just win, he adapts. At Portimão, when pace deserted him in Race 1 and he finished 25th, he recovered to points in Race 2 and then inherited a podium in Race 3. Damage limitation at 15 years old.
That is a driver with a head on his shoulders, not just fast hands. Isack Hadjar showed a similar pattern before his Red Bull promotion, and the comparison is not unfair.
Whether Coronel’s path runs through F2 and then a seat beside Liam Lawson or alongside another future teammate, the Red Bull pipeline is real and it moves fast. Keep a close eye on the F1 2026 engine and development landscape as the formula Coronel will eventually inherit continues to take shape.
