Valtteri Bottas Cadillac Driver Profile: Finland’s Veteran Racing for a Fresh Start in 2026

Nationality: Finnish | Date of Birth: 28 August 1989 | Team: Cadillac | Car Number: 77

Valtteri Bottas is one of the most experienced drivers on the 2026 Formula 1 grid. The Valtteri Bottas Cadillac partnership is a fresh chapter in a long career. The Finn competes in Formula One for Cadillac, having twice finished runner-up in the World Drivers’ Championship in 2019 and 2020 with Mercedes, and having won 10 Grands Prix across 13 seasons. He brings enormous knowledge to a brand-new team, and that combination makes him one of the most intriguing stories of the 2026 season.

Career History: From Williams to Cadillac

Bottas began his Formula One career with Williams in 2013 after spending two years as the team’s test driver. The 2014 season was a breakthrough year, as Bottas finished fourth in the Drivers’ Championship, securing his maiden career podium at the Austrian Grand Prix.

In 2017, Bottas was called up to Mercedes to replace the retiring Nico Rosberg, joining forces with Lewis Hamilton. He quickly adapted, taking his first pole position in Bahrain and securing his maiden career win at the 2017 Russian Grand Prix. Over his five seasons with Mercedes, Bottas helped the team win five consecutive Constructors’ titles and achieved a total of 10 race wins, 20 pole positions, and 58 podiums.

After a winless 2018 campaign, Bottas finished runner-up to Hamilton in both the 2019 and 2020 seasons. He took his final win for Mercedes at the Turkish Grand Prix in 2021, leaving at the end of the season after contributing to five consecutive World Constructors’ Championships.

He then spent three seasons at Alfa Romeo and Kick Sauber. After a non-scoring 2024 season at the re-branded Sauber, Bottas returned to Mercedes as a reserve driver. In August 2025, Cadillac announced that Bottas had signed for their debut 2026 campaign alongside six-time Grand Prix winner Sergio Pérez.

Valtteri Bottas Cadillac: 2026 Season So Far

Both Cadillac drivers were forced out of the Austrian Grand Prix in the opening laps with brake problems. Cadillac had brought an extensive upgrade package to the Red Bull Ring, hopeful it would move the car further into the midfield battle. Bottas was forced out after just two laps.

The former Williams and Mercedes driver has failed to score a single point this season, with his highest finish coming at the Chinese Grand Prix with a P13. The 36-year-old has admitted he does not feel comfortable in the car yet, and that deciding on the right set-up directions has been a persistent challenge. He also highlighted the unpredictable behaviour of the MAC-26 on track.

However, Bottas himself stays positive about the bigger picture. Now that he is at the first brand-new team to join the F1 grid in a decade, Bottas has been able to get more heavily involved in the design of the car, something he had never previously experienced. He has also noted that his year out from the sport has done nothing but motivate him and made him appreciate what he has now he is back in a full-time race seat.

Driving Style and Personality

Learning his craft on Finnish roads of ice and snow, Bottas was born to be a Grand Prix racer. He explains that if you can drive on the frozen roads of his homeland, you can drive anywhere. There’s the Finnish mentality too: reserved, diligent, and calm. On track, he is known for clean, consistent racecraft and strong one-lap pace. He has achieved 10 race wins, 20 pole positions, 19 fastest laps and 67 podiums in Formula One.

Off track, Bottas is one of F1’s most entertaining personalities. He does not take himself overly seriously, and that humility helps humanize him, an important trait in today’s media landscape where authenticity matters. He is also a co-founder of FNLD GRVL, a gravel cycling event in Lahti, Finland. He is also famous for his charity work, including nude calendars that have raised significant funds for good causes.

What Makes Bottas Unique in F1

Bottas holds the Formula One record for the most career points without a World Drivers’ Championship, with 1,797. It is a record he has mixed feelings about, but one that proves just how consistent he has been at the highest level for over a decade.

He and Perez are among the most experienced drivers in the paddock, boasting 16 GP wins and over 500 race starts between them. Engine supply comes from Ferrari, with Cadillac owners General Motors due to debut their own power unit from 2029. Bottas is not just a driver for Cadillac; he is a builder. His feedback, experience, and calm character are exactly what a new team needs.

The road ahead is not easy, but Bottas has shown throughout his career that he never gives up. His story at Cadillac is still being written. Check out our George Russell driver profile and Oscar Piastri driver profile for more 2026 driver coverage on RNT Motorsports.
